Bio
Dr. Sandeep Chinta is a Postdoctoral Associate at the MIT Center for Global Change Science (CGCS). He graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar and received his Ph.D. from IIT Madras. During his Ph.D., he developed techniques to improve the short-range prediction of heavy rainfall events during the Indian summer monsoon, using parameter calibration and data assimilation. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Chinta worked as a Senior Project Officer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras. He gained expertise in advanced machine learning and optimization techniques during his research at IIT Madras.
At CGCS, Dr. Chinta's research focuses on the impacts of changing weather and climate extremes on specific regions and communities. He also conducts modeling experiments using the state-of-the-art methane biogeochemistry model (i.e., E3SM land model). He uses machine learning to emulate model-simulated methane emissions for model sensitivity analysis and parameter calibration. His work has significant implications for understanding the impacts of climate change on the environment and human societies. In the future, Dr. Chinta plans to continue his research on climate change impacts and mitigation strategies. In addition, he hopes to further develop techniques that combine modeling and machine learning to improve our understanding of the complex interactions between the climate system, ecosystems, and human activities.
