Marotzke is a director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany, and was an MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS) faculty member in the 1990s. He has spent his career researching the role of the ocean in climate and climate change, and recently expanded his interests to include multi-year to decadal climate prediction.
