Seminar: Predictive Understanding of Disasters

December 05, 2008,
4:00am - 5:00pm

Professor Vladimir Keilis-Borok, Department of Earth and Space Sciences, UCLA, will speak in the EAPS Department Lecture Series. About the Speaker: Prof. Keilis-Borok is perhaps best known for his work on the non-linear dynamics of the Earth's crust (and earthquake prediction), however, he applies the same methodology to elucidate critical transitions in chaotic socio-economic systems. He is currently project leader of Understanding and Prediction of Critical Transitions in Complex Systems, which has developed prediction algorithms for (among other things) economic recessions in the USA. He is the founder, and Director Emeritus, of the International Institute of Earthquake Prediction Theory and Mathematical Geophysics, Moscow. He received a Ph.D. in mathematical geophysics from the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1948.
