MIT Energy Club: Carbon Capture and Sequestration Research Seminar

December 09, 2009,
2:30pm - 4:30pm

A panel will discuss the current state of technology in carbon capture and storate (CCS) as well as the economic, and policy-related hurdles to making it a scalable reality in the US, the EU and in China. Generation of electrical power is responsible for roughly 40% of carbon dioxide emissions in the US and coal-fired generation, in particular, contributes over 80% of the CO2 emissions from this country's electric power sector. A recent report from the U.S. National Research Council recently called for building a suite of 15 to 20 power plants with carbon capture and storage before 2020. Today, a few such projects are under development as capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide is still in its infancy stage. A substantial ramp up is needed for this technique to have an impact on atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide.
