Climate Change as an Issue of Business Strategy

Speaker: Andrew J. Hoffman, Holcim (US) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan. Abstract: Within business, climate change should not be seen as an environmental issue; instead it should be viewed as a market shift, one that takes the form of both systemic risks that cut across the entire economy and regulatory, legal, strategic, and reputational risks that impact the sector, industry, and company-specific levels. In fact, one can remain completely agnostic about the science of climate change and still recognize its importance as a business issue. Regulations are being developed that alter the price of carbon and will affect energy pricing and availability which will create a ripple effect throughout entire value chains. This will alter key aspects of business strategy, including production economics, cost competitiveness, investment decisions, and the value of different kinds of assets. Further stimulating this shift is interest among investors, shareholders, insurers (and reinsurers), consumers and others. This presentation will present the results of a 31-company survey and six in-depth case studies to explain the motivations behind and challenges of developing and implementing climate-related strategies.
